September gives us a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the people who make early learning special.

On Wednesday, 2 September 2026, Early Childhood Educators’ Day recognises the important role educators play in supporting children’s learning, development and wellbeing.

At Skippy’s Early Learning, we see that role every day.  Our educators observe, listen, encourage, extend ideas, create environments and find opportunities for children to explore, discover, learn and grow.

But there is another very important member of your child’s learning team.

YOU.

You Know Your Child Best

Families know the little things that nobody else can know quite as well.

The song your child asks for every morning.

Their fascination with trucks, insects, dinosaurs or cooking.

The new baby arriving at home.

The weekend trip to the beach they haven't stopped talking about.

The words they use in your home language.

The new skill they are determined to master.

The things that make them laugh, feel proud, become curious or sometimes need a little extra reassurance.

To us, these aren't just lovely stories.

They are opportunities for learning.

At Skippy's, we work in partnership with families to help guide our curriculum and planning because we recognise the valuable knowledge families hold about their children.  Our educators then combine that knowledge with their professional observations and understanding of early childhood development to plan meaningful, play-based learning experiences.

From a Family Conversation to a Learning Adventure

Imagine mentioning at drop-off that your child spent the weekend helping Grandad plant tomatoes.

That one little conversation might spark something much bigger.

An educator may notice your child continuing to talk about gardening and build on that interest through planting seeds, measuring growth, drawing plants, investigating insects, reading garden stories or talking about where food comes from.

One family story can become an opportunity for science, language, mathematics, creativity, problem-solving and connection — all through something that already means something to your child.

That's why we want families to tell us what is happening beyond the doors of Skippy's.

Your Input Doesn't Have to Be Complicated

Family participation doesn't need to mean writing paragraphs or knowing educational terminology.

It might simply be:

• telling us what your child is interested in at the moment

• sharing something exciting that happened at home

• commenting on a learning story or photo

• telling us about a new skill you have noticed

• sharing your family's culture, traditions, celebrations, language or experiences

• letting us know about a goal you have for your child

• telling an educator, "They haven't stopped talking about this at home!"

• sharing what your child has been doing or saying about their learning at Skippy's.

ACECQA's guidance on connecting with families recognises that there are different ways for families to be involved and that genuine partnerships develop through everyday relationships, meaningful conversations and listening to one another.

The National Quality Standard also recognises families as having expertise in their own children and highlights the importance of families sharing in decisions about their child's learning and wellbeing.

When Home and Skippy's Connect

Something special happens when children realise that the important adults in their worlds are connected.

"Mum told you about my garden!"

"That's what we do at Grandma's house!"

"I have that book at home!"

Suddenly, their home experiences belong in their learning environment too.

That connection helps us create learning experiences that are meaningful to the individual child rather than simply providing the same experiences for everyone.

It also helps our educators get to know the whole child — their interests, family, culture, strengths, experiences, personality and the things that make them uniquely them.
