General Questions
At Skippy’s, we believe children are capable, curious learners who learn best when they feel safe, connected and genuinely involved in their learning. Our approach is inspired by the Reggio Emilia philosophy, which sees children as active participants in their learning. Rather than simply giving children the answers, our educators encourage them to ask questions, explore ideas, make choices, experiment and discover things for themselves. This sits alongside our focus on child-led, project-based learning, schema play and “process over product”. Your child’s interests, ideas and discoveries can help shape what happens in their learning environment. We also place relationships first. Through our Five Cups behaviour guidance framework, we look beyond behaviour to understand what a child may be communicating and what they need to feel supported and connected. At Skippy’s, we’re not just preparing children for their next room or school. We’re helping them become resilient, respectful, confident, empathetic, independent and curious little humans.
Skippy’s isn’t a big national childcare chain. We’re a family-owned, local early learning provider that has been part of the community for 19 years, with three established centres in Frenchville, Gracemere and Yeppoon. Over those 19 years, generations of local families have become part of the Skippy’s community, and many of our educators and leaders have grown with us too. That means children and families are welcomed by familiar faces and supported by people who genuinely know their children. In fact, many of our staff are long-serving educators who have been with Skippy’s for 5, 10, even 19 years! Day to day, we want learning to feel joyful, meaningful and connected to real life, where a shared meal, a muddy hand, a problem solved or a new “I can do it!” can all become opportunities to explore, learn and build confidence. As a family-oriented service, we strive to make Skippy’s feel like an extension of home, where children and families feel known, welcomed and connected. Our experienced educators and dedicated educational leaders are supported to continually grow and improve, while our leadership team is visible on the floor, working alongside educators, children and families, not simply behind a desk.
Our educators bring a combination of relevant Early Childhood qualifications, experience and a genuine passion for helping children learn and grow. All of our staff are First Aid, CPR and anaphylaxis qualified and hold the required Working with Children Checks (Blue Cards). Many of our educators and leaders are long-serving members of the Skippy’s team, having grown with us throughout our 19 years of local experience. This experience means families can enjoy the familiarity, consistency and trusted relationships that are so important in the early years. We also invest in our educators’ ongoing growth through professional development and mentoring. Our dedicated Educational Leaders support educators to reflect on their practice and strengthen children’s learning, while our Pedagogical Leader focuses on how children learn and how we can continually improve our approach.
