What Child Safety Really Means in Early Childhood

When families think about child safety in Childcare and Early Childhood Education, they often think about secure gates, supervision, safe sleep practices, and ensuring children are protected from harm. While these are all incredibly important, true child safety goes far beyond physical environments alone.

At Skippy’s Early Learning Centres across Rockhampton (Frenchville), Gracemere, and Yeppoon, child safety is embedded into every part of our culture, daily practices, decision-making, and relationships with children and families.

For us, child safety means creating environments where children feel:

✨ Safe✨ Respected✨ Heard✨ Supported✨ Included✨ Valued

Every child deserves to feel secure, confident, and emotionally safe while learning, playing, exploring, and building relationships in their Early Childhood years.

A Stronger Focus on Child Safe Practices

As Child Safe reforms continue to strengthen across the Early Childhood Education and Care sector in Australia, our teams have been actively undertaking significant work behind the scenes to ensure we continue delivering the highest standards of care, protection, and professionalism for our children and families.

Over recent months, our leadership teams, Qualified Educators, Kindy Teachers, Educational Leaders, and management teams have participated in an intensive Child Safe program developed by the Australian Childcare Alliance Queensland (ACA QLD).

This program has supported us in reviewing, strengthening, and refining many areas across our services — almost like a complete Child Safe systems overhaul. 🛡️

The program has focused on:

  • Child Safe culture and leadership

  • Strengthening supervision and risk management practices

  • Safer recruitment and onboarding procedures

  • Child Safe environments

  • Educator accountability and professional conduct

  • Policies and procedures

  • Family communication and partnerships

  • Children’s rights, voice, and wellbeing

At Skippy’s, we believe Childcare centres should be places where families feel confident knowing their children are cared for by passionate, professional, and highly trained teams who genuinely prioritise children’s safety and wellbeing every single day.

Investing in Ongoing Educator Training 📚

We also know that creating safe environments requires ongoing learning and continuous improvement.

As part of our commitment to high-quality Early Childhood Education in Central Queensland, we have recently introduced a Learning Management System platform across our services.

Through this system, our team complete ongoing in-house professional learning modules covering:

  • Child Safe practices

  • Policies and procedures

  • Compliance and regulatory requirements

  • Supervision and safety expectations

  • Centre processes and How-To Guides

  • Professional conduct and responsibilities

This allows our teams to access training consistently, remain up to date with sector expectations, and continue building strong professional knowledge across all areas of Early Childhood Education and Care.

Safer Recruitment & Stronger Teams 👩‍🏫

Another important area we have strengthened is our recruitment and onboarding processes.

When recruiting Qualified Educators, Teachers, and team members across our Childcare and Kindergarten services, we place a very strong focus on ensuring candidates align with our Child Safe values, professional expectations, and commitment to respectful relationships with children.

This includes:✔️ Enhanced recruitment screening✔️ Referee and background checks✔️ Child Safe onboarding processes✔️ Ongoing professional development✔️ Clear expectations around behaviour and conduct

We know that strong Child Safe cultures begin with employing the right people — educators who are nurturing, professional, reflective, and committed to creating safe environments where children can thrive.

Working Together with Families 🤝

Creating truly Child Safe environments is something that works best when services and families work together in partnership.

We value open communication, family input, transparency, and ongoing collaboration with our community. Families play such an important role in helping children feel safe, secure, and confident in their learning environments.

We are incredibly proud of the work our teams continue to do across our Early Learning Centres and Kindergartens in Rockhampton (Frenchville), Gracemere, and Yeppoon to strengthen our Child Safe practices and continue improving every day.

At Skippy’s, child safety is not simply a checklist or policy requirement — it is part of who we are and the culture we continue to build for children, families, and our educators. 💛
