Digital Technologies in Early Childhood

At Skippy’s Early Learning, we believe digital technologies can play a valuable role in early childhood education when they are used intentionally, meaningfully, and always in ways that support children’s learning and development.
Across our centres in Rockhampton (Frenchville), Gracemere and Yeppoon in Central Queensland, we take a thoughtful, balanced, and purposeful approach to integrating technology into early education and care.
Purposeful Use of Technology
Our guiding principle is simple: if a learning experience can be achieved just as effectively with hands-on materials, real-life interaction, or pen and paper, then that is always our first choice. Technology is never used for the sake of it or to replace learning opportunities, but only when it enhances learning in a purposeful way and adds genuine value.
We see digital technologies as tools, not replacements for rich, play-based experiences.
How We Use Digital Technologies at Skippy’s
iPads for Creative Expression (Not Passive Screen Time)
At Skippy’s, iPads are not used for passive viewing or entertainment. Instead, they are carefully integrated into learning in ways that support children’s curiosity and expression, including:
· Exploring and creating music and dance experiences
· Taking photographs to document their learning, play, and discoveries
· Capturing special moments in their play-based learning journey or supporting children to reflect on their learning journey.
This approach encourages children to see technology as a creative tool rather than a form of passive consumption, helping build early digital literacy in meaningful ways, while also supporting children’s creativity and communication.
Interactive Whiteboards for Learning Experiences
Our interactive whiteboards are used intentionally to extend learning opportunities such as:
· Guided yoga and movement sessions to support relaxation, regulation, and mindfulness
· Visual learning experiences to support children who learn best through seeing concepts demonstrated
· Shared group learning where ideas, stories, and concepts can be explored collaboratively
These experiences help create calm, engaging, and inclusive learning environments where all children can participate and connect in different ways.
Supporting Diverse Learners through Balanced Practice
We recognise that every child learns differently. Some children respond strongly to visual learning, while others thrive through movement, conversation, hands-on exploration, or sensory play.
Digital technologies, when used thoughtfully, allow educators to extend and enrich these learning styles – without replacing the importance of real-world, hands-on discovery that forms the foundation of early childhood education.
A Balanced Approach to Early Childhood Education
At Skippy’s, we are committed to providing high-quality early childhood education and care that carefully balances:
· Hands-on, play-based learning experiences
· Outdoor exploration and connection with the natural world
· Intentional and limited use of digital technologies
Technology is never the centre of learning – it is simply one of many tools we use to support it.
Supporting Families and Online Safety
At Skippy’s, we recognise that digital safety extends beyond the classroom. We support families by sharing trusted information and resources to help keep children safe online.
Families can access guidance and support through the eSafety Commissioner, Australia’s national online safety authority, which provides practical advice on screen time, online safety, and responding to digital risks.
Learning First. Technology Second. Always.
At the heart of everything we do is a simple belief: children learn best through active, hands-on, meaningful experiences with people, places, and play.
Digital technologies will always have a place at Skippy’s – but only when they add value, deepen learning and support children to explore the world in richer, more connected ways.
Because in early childhood education, it’s not about more technology – it’s about better learning.
And at Skippy’s, learning always comes first.
We believe children benefit most when technology is used sparingly, intentionally, and always in service of learning outcomes, supported by strong partnerships with families.
Our focus remains on nurturing confident, curious, and capable learners who are ready for school and life.
