our curriculum

As part of our care and education program, we develop Creative Memory Journals to document each child’s learning and development journey.  Creative Memory Journals (CMJ) are a collection of observations, samples of your child’s work/achievements and anecdotes of your child’s experiences and learning at Skippy’s.


CMJ's become a story of your child’s developmental journey at Skippy's, demonstrating skills they have developed, telling stories of play situations and highlighting interactions and friendships being made. It also acts as a record of your child’s interests, likes, dislikes and other events or activities.


We use these Journals to plan experiences and make appropriate provisions to meet and extend upon the individual needs and interests of your child.

Skippy’s Early Learning Centre offers a Queensland Government approved Kindergarten program delivered by a qualified Early Childhood teacher for eligible children in their year prior to attending Prep.

Along with the recommended learning framework of the Queensland Kindergarten Learning Guideline our program includes are own designed School Readiness curriculum and the Write2Spell2Read Program.

Write2Spell2Read authored by Sam Woods, a Rockhampton based Occupational Therapist and Certified Neurodevelopment Therapist, is a multi-sensory program which is important because in early childhood the brain is most active in the development and integration of strong sensory pathways. Children are now expected to display a much higher level of foundational literacy skills before entering the prep year at school.

Using a play based approach, Write2Spell2Read use pictures that match the shape of letters, as well as starting with that letter and sound. This program is an advanced platform for teaching literacy to a broad spectrum of children for writing, spelling, reading, comprehension and fluency, and is achieving literacy success.

The Kindergarten program operates from 8:30am to 4:30pm and as we are also a long day care setting we offer wrap around care for your child outside these times. When you enrol in our Kindy program we provide the flexibility for your child to attend high quality care between 6:30am to 8:30am in the morning and 4:30pm to 6:00pm in the afternoon within a long day care environment.

We teach children how to live in a healthy way, and to take increasing responsibility for making good health choices and caring for themselves, as this enables our children to experience wellbeing in their lives, and lays the foundation for a healthy lifestyle in the future.


A key part of our healthy body, healthy minds program involves children seeing these modelled positively and enthusiastically by their educators and their peers. 


Our educators identify and use learning opportunities in everyday experiences such as meal times, hygiene procedures, active play times and toileting routines as we understand that learning about healthy lifestyles occurs most effectively when children participate in hands on practice. 


We believe that psychological wellbeing is as important as physical wellbeing to children’s overall health status.  Our educators are attuned to children’s thoughts and feelings, and support the development of a strong sense of children’s wellbeing. We build positive relationships with children, getting to know each child’s strengths, interests and abilities, and their home and community experiences. We do this by build positive, interactive partnerships with our children and families.


Our educators support children to become strong in their social and emotional wellbeing and resilient, confident learners which enables them to cope with day-to-day challenges and frustrations, and recognise and feel good about their own achievements and those of others.

We understand that leaving your child in someone else’s care is a difficult thing to do. We assure you that safety is our top priority and our educators follow safety practices every day. 

We have a number of  Health and Safety policies and procedures which are accessible to families and  our educators go through a comprehensive Educator Orientation and Induction ensuring they have the knowledge to follow our health and safety policies and procedures.


​At all times, we ensure that our centre is secure and free of hazards, both inside and out. We conduct daily playground checks and audits, fire, emergency evacuation and lockdown drills are a regular part of our informed approach to safety. We emphasise safety education by creating an atmosphere of safety awareness in all aspects of the day. You will see visual safety guides around our centre, such as our sun smart posters. These tools support our lessons about safety, which we discuss as part of the curriculum. We take every opportunity to act as role models, pointing out tripping or slipping hazards and putting hats and sunscreen on for outdoor play. We discuss personal safety with the children to build awareness and help the children to talk freely with us if they are or worried or concerned.


We welcome all children with a wide variety of abilities, backgrounds or needs. If your child requires extra medical, emotional or learning support, we will tailor our care for them and work closely with you to ensure they have a smooth transition into our centre. This includes seeking support from other networks or professionals to bridge any gaps in our service delivery.
